    Formation and development of typhoons

    Typhoons mainly form in the western Pacific.

    The warm waters south of 20 degrees latitude offer ideal conditions for the formation of such storm systems. The decisive factors are high water temperatures, high humidity and the low wind shear that is common there. The typical path begins with the development over the western Pacific.

    From there, the storm systems usually move westwards towards Southeast Asia.

    • Due to the rotation of the earth and regional wind patterns, the typhoon usually follows an arc-shaped route, which soon causes it to drift northwards and can lead it to China.

    Most typhoons that make landfall in China have previously made their way across the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan and have little power in China.
