The amount of medication that gets into breast milk and how it affects a baby depends on things like the type of medicine, the dosage, how it's taken, and your baby's age.

Babies who were born preterm or who are younger than 1 month old may have more medication enter their bloodstream because their systems are immature. Medications exit their systems more slowly, too.
